I'll Start  Krav Maga When I am Fit

This is the most common objection we get in Krav Maga when newbies come in to try a class. Just a couple of weeks ago Senior Instructor Kurt had a girl come in and say that word-for-word. If we were to have a dollar for every time we hear that, we’d have at least a thousand bucks!

Kurt handled this objection differently this time, he said: ‘Look, I’ve heard that a thousand times. Every single person who has told me that has never come back. I don’t mean to be rude, but the mindset is backwards. How much exercise are you doing right now?’.

‘Ummmm, nothing’.

‘Well okay, and can you be 100% sure that you’re about to start exercising so that you can prepare for Krav Maga?

‘Mmmmmm’.

Wanting to get fit first, is backwards. Getting fit is the outcome. As you begin and work up to a higher level, you’re able to do more and more. The results will come from doing the action.

Now don’t get me wrong, if you think like this I completely get where you’re coming from. You want to be ‘sure’ you can handle it. However, (from my perspective) the longer you put it off the more you just keep practicing a thought-pattern of ‘non-action’, and the easier it becomes to do nothing (or, the harder it becomes to do something).

No one is going to judge you or make fun of you if you can’t keep up at first ( I can say that at the very least for Krav Maga Systems, and most schools just want to see you succeed). You gotta realise too that everyone else in the class is pre-occupied about making sure they don’t fall behind. They aren’t watching your every movement, waiting for you to stuff up, and the instructors aren’t waiting to pounce on you if you do (they ARE there to help you out). You may not have heard this saying before, but I find it to be a very good tool in giving myself a reality check: “You wouldn’t worry so much about what others think of you, if you realised how seldom they do.”

In short, if Krav Maga or any similar style is something you really want to do, then you should just start. There’s no time like the present. Even if it doesn’t end up working out for you, what’s the worst that can happen? You’ll have the experience of training for a bit and then you can move on. Hopefully though, once you realise you CAN do it, you’ll stick around for a while.
